Shiva has many names and many meanings. One of his roles is the Destroyer, but what he destroys are ego, ignorance, attachment, desire, sickness... and even death itself, as attested by the legend of Markandeya and Yama. Shiva's other names have lots of meaning, including the Lord of Dance (Nataraj), the Lord of Animals (Pashupati), Kantha (Ever Radiant), etc, incl. Maheshvara (The Great Lord).
